If you've played previous Dawn of War 2 entries you've likely played the majority of the armies in Retribution, but the Imperial Guard are making their first appearance ever. It's light on the RPG elements, but it's enough that loot hounds can easily get addicted to it for something beyond the bloody action. Additionally, players level up their hero units, giving them special abilities and filling up their equipment slots so they can customize them to their playstyle.

After each mission, players can choose a reward, either gaining access to a new piece of loot for their characters, or giving their army a passive buff. Retribution's appeal, besides being based on an awesome strategy game, is rooted in leveling up and collecting loot. Each army has some sort of unique structure to it, the goal being to make the campaign have a lot of replayability since each army will provide a different experience in battle.

Space Marines, on the other hand, have heroes in every unit, making each soldier valuable and painful to lose. Orks, for example, have hero units which are on their own, supplementing their forces with expendable units. I can't say for sure since I only got to play as the Orks, but I imagine that the campaign will play pretty differently based on what army you choose. Yeah, I know, I know, it sucks that they don't have their own individual campaigns, but I think we should all be happy that Relic's finally giving us the chance to play the way we want to, rather than forcing us to use an army we might hate. Players just choose Orks, Space Marines, Eldar, Tyrannid, Chaos, or the Imperial Guard, taking them through the same levels. Instead of just giving players one race to play the campaign with, Retribution provides six. Sure, Retribution doesn't break the Dawn of War 2 mold, keeping the same basic mechanics, but it does try something new with the campaign.

Suffice it say, this is the full Dawn of War 2 experience at a price that seems more than reasonable. And it still has all the multiplayer modes people have come to love. It still does away with all the base-building so many RTS games seemed obsessed with, keeping you focused on the action at all times. It's still a strategy title based around using relatively small forces in order to fight intense skirmishes. Despite being a $30 stand-alone expansion (read: you don't need the other games to play it), it's fully featured. If you've never played Dawn of War 2 before, Retribution looks like a good place to start.
